In 1967, while the industrial sector had emerged as the largest contributor to national wealth in all Eastern European countries, the agricultural sector remained the largest employer in most countries, and by a significant margin in the Balkans. It was only in Czechoslovakia, East Germany and Hungary where the industrial sector had become the largest employer. Compared to 1950, however, there was an overall decline in agricultural employment and increased industrial employment in all countries, and a general increases in employment in the trade, construction, and transport and communication industries.
