At the end of February 2022, the Russian government started blocking several social media platforms in the country due to their actions in relation to the Russia-Ukraine war, such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. The total cost of social media shutdowns in that year amounted to around **** billion U.S. dollars. In the following year, the cost amounted to **** billion U.S. dollars, and in 2024, it increased to **** billion U.S. dollars. Russia's internet shutdowns were the most costly worldwide in 2023.
