Rising popularity of cashless payments
The ratio of cashless payments in Japan has experienced significant growth, more than doubling over the past decade. The rise was mainly due to increased credit card spending, but the value of QR code and barcode payments also doubled from 2021 to 2023. This surge can be attributed to the cashless point reward program the government introduced in 2019. The impact of the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) and the need to reduce physical contact further fueled the popularity of cashless payments.
