Respondents who said they are aware of Chinese loans or development assistance were asked: "Do you think that our government is required to repay China for the loans and development assistance it provides to our country? Do you think our government has borrowed too much money from China?"
Respondents who were not aware of Chinese loans or development assistance were excluded.

Africans' perception on Chinese loans to their countries 2019-2021
Around ** percent of Africans who knew their countries received loans from China were also aware that their governments will be required to repay the debts, according to the survey conducted between 2019 and 2021. Except for Lesotho, more than half of the citizens in the ** surveyed countries were aware of the obligation. Moreover, ** percent of Kenyans said their government borrowed too much money from China.
