Passenger cars are classified under Japan鈥檚 Road Vehicles Act in three categories, based primarily on engine capacity: 鈥渟tandard鈥 (over 2,000cc), 鈥渟mall鈥 (661cc-2,000cc), and 鈥渕ini鈥 (660cc and under).

According to a survey conducted in 2023 about the usage of light motor vehicles among private households and businesses in Japan, most kei car drivers were female, with only ** percent of main drivers being male.
