Passenger cars are classified under Japan鈥檚 Road Vehicles Act in three categories, based primarily on engine capacity: 鈥渟tandard鈥 (over 2,000cc), 鈥渟mall鈥 (661cc-2,000cc), and 鈥渕ini鈥 (660cc and under).

According to a survey conducted in 2023 about the usage of light motor vehicles among private households and businesses in Japan, the most common body type of owned mini passenger cars were super tall cars with **, slightly ahead of tall cars. Japanese mini cars or kei cars must not exceed *** meters in length, * meters in height, and **** meters in width. The engine capacity is restricted to **** liters.
