Since the Great Recession, the interest coverage ratio of the 1,000 largest U.S. companies has been falling, with the ** largest nonfinancial companies reducing their ratio by *** percent points between 2010 and 2017. This compares to an increase of *** percentage points in the period between 2002 and 2007.
The interest coverage ratio is calculated by dividing a company's earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) by their interest payments due.
