Access Types
Get started with modern authentication options
To support secure, reliable, and flexible access to our platform, we offer multiple authentication methods designed for today's academic and organizational environments.
This guide outlines the supported access types and how to begin implementation with the help of our support team.
Authentication options overview
OpenAthens
A cloud-based identity provider (IdP) that connects your local directory to external services using a SAML proxy. It is federation-compatible (e.g., eduGAIN) and connects institutions without federation access.
Shibboleth
An open-source SAML solution commonly used by universities. It allows users to log in with institutional credentials and maintain access across sessions without re-authenticating.
SAML
A standards-based protocol that securely exchanges login data between your institution’s Identity Provider and our platform. SAML supports token-based, user-specific assertions.
OpenID Connect
A modern authentication protocol based on OAuth 2.0. Works with IdPs like Google Workspace or Microsoft Entra ID, enabling secure single sign-on (SSO) and seamless user experiences.
Key benefits
