2022 U.S. midterm election - statistics & facts
2022 was another election year in the United States. This time around, it was the midterm congressional elections - in which the entirety of the House of Representatives (435 seats), and one-third of the Senate (35 seats) were contested. Midterm elections are always held two years after the most recent presidential election and are often thought to be a temperature check on how the public feels about the current government. The party of the sitting president historically loses seats in a midterm, which can result in a shifting of the power dynamics on Capitol Hill. Heading into election day, pollster consensus was in favor of the Republican party, with many in the media forecasting a "red wave," given President Biden's low approval rating, voters fears around the economy, and perceived increases in the crime rate.
