Founded in 2002 and acquired in 2016 by Microsoft, LinkedIn attracts everyone, from young professionals to CEOs. The service has established the necessity for a global network that is focused on employment and career development. With no competitors to speak of at this point in time, LinkedIn sits comfortably as the go-to professional network.
LinkedIn provides a way for professionals from all levels and industries to easily connect. Additionally, self-promotion posts for small or large accomplishments are more than welcome. However, as with all social media platforms, growth comes with increased opportunities for misuse. Users are typically the ones who suffer the most, and job hunting and career progression are not safe from this type of exploitation. In 2024, jobseekers in the United States reported that job portals and social media platforms were the most likely places for them to have encountered fraudulent job advertisements. This pattern was also seen across the United Kingdom and Germany. Overall, 49 percent of victims of fake job postings have been asked to provide unnecessary personal information, while one in four had been asked for payment. Moreover, the finance industry was the most pursued among job scammers, accounting for over one-third of reported scams.
