Inn 2024, the total installed power capacity in Spain surpassed *** gigawatts, with solar photovoltaics and wind power leading the way. As of the end of that year, solar photovoltaic energy boasted the largest installed capacity with **** gigawatts, closely followed by wind power at **** gigawatts. Combined cycle and hydropower plants were the third and fourth-largest electricity generation technologies by installed capacity in Spain.  

Rapid growth in renewable capacity 

The installed power capacity in Spain has seen net growth, increasing by over ** gigawatts in the past five years. This expansion is primarily attributed to the installation of renewable technologies across the country. While there was a slight decrease in total installed capacity between 2015 and 2018 due to the closure of some coal power stations, the overall trend has been strongly positive.  

Spain’s electricity consumption 

Despite the growth in installed capacity, electricity generation in Spain has experienced a downward trend since 2010. In 2024, the country's electricity generation stood at *** terawatt-hours, rebounding from its lowest point of *** terawatt-hours in 2020. Households remain the largest consumers of electricity in Spain, using approximately *** million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2023, closely followed by the service and commerce sector. The share of electricity in Spain's final energy consumption has generally increased since 1990, reaching **** percent in 2020, although the last three years have seen a decrease.
