Although the Business Confidence Index has recently returned to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, Italian companies and entrepreneurs face numerous challenges. With the U.S. as the second-largest buyer of Italian goods, tariffs on European exports threaten to harm domestic industrial production and impact jobs. The reduction of energy costs and the protection of the national steel and automotive industries, while still aiming for climate neutrality, are additional obstacles Italian businesses must cope with. Even though northern Italy remains the main engine of the country’s economy, the southern regions have the highest number of companies nationwide. Meanwhile, Milan remains the leading hub for startups and innovative enterprises.
