Tourism industry in the Asia-Pacific region - statistics & facts
Asia-Pacific: A thriving tourism hub
During the initial year of the pandemic, the global tourism industry faced a decline due to strict travel regulations. However, in the past years, many regions, including the APAC region, saw an increase in tourist arrivals as border regulations have eased. The APAC tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with job numbers and international arrivals showing strong upward trends. The travel and tourism industry has contributed greatly to employment in the region, providing almost 200 million jobs. The APAC region offers a variety of experiences, catering to a wide range of traveler interests. Cultural tourism thrives in countries such as Japan, China, and South Korea, where traditions blend with modern attractions. Beach holidays in countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, or Vietnam are attractive for travelers seeking the sun and sea, while urban cities are hubs for business and leisure travel alike. Destinations in APAC are popular even among residents in the region, as cities such as Tokyo or Singapore were the most preferred international travel destinations among APAC consumers. This shows the diverse appeal and capacity of the region to attract tourists from around the world.
The rising middle class and domestic tourism boom
In recent years, the rapid economic development in many APAC nations has led to the emergence of a growing middle class. With rising disposable incomes, many APAC citizens now have greater financial flexibility to spend on travel. This shift has fueled an increase in domestic tourism, as more residents decide to explore destinations within their own countries. Since many territories within the region are close by, it makes travel more affordable and convenient. As a result, local travel has become an attractive option, leading to staggering domestic tourism expenditures. In Southeast Asia alone, spending on domestic tourism surpassed 150 billion U.S. dollars. According to a survey, Southeast Asian tourists were most likely to spend on experiences, such as going to a spa or concerts, and luxury fashion when traveling domestically. These trends highlight the increasing preference for regional exploration, further emphasizing Asia-Pacific’s status as a dynamic and evolving tourism market.
