Outbound tourism in European countries - statistics & facts
Outbound tourism refers to the act of traveling outside of an individual’s home country for the purpose of tourism and vacation. European outbound tourism is a key component of the travel and tourism industry in Europe and an important market for tourist destinations worldwide. In fact, Europe had the highest number of outbound travelers of all global regions in 2019. That year, there were over 702 million international tourist arrivals worldwide who originated from Europe. Though the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to a reduction in global travel in 2020, Europe was estimated to have the smallest drop in outbound tourism visitor growth worldwide that year. In 2021, outbound tourism from Europe was expected to grow again at the same rate as the Americas, though less than half as fast as outbound tourism from the Asia Pacific region.
