There were approximately 69.3 million people living in the United Kingdom in 2024, making it the third-largest country in Europe , behind only Russia and Germany, and slightly ahead of France. Since 2000 there has been a net increase of over 10.4 million people in the United Kingdom, with the country passing the 60 million mark in 2005. Between 2019 and 2020, however, the UK population grew by just 0.17 percent, which was the slowest rate since the early 1980s. In 2024, women outnumbered men in the UK by approximately 1.4 million, although that gap was far greater in the past, such as in 1950 when there were almost two million more women than men.
