Chipotle Mexican Grill - statistics & facts
Since launching three decades ago, Chipotle Mexican Grill’s restaurant count has increased every year. In 2025, the number of restaurants operated by Chipotle reached over 4,000, with locations across its home market of the United States and internationally in Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
How successful is Chipotle?
Unlike fast food restaurants like ²Ñ³¦¶Ù´Ç²Ô²¹±ô»å’s, Chipotle operates in the fast casual market segment, which comprises restaurants that typically offer a more upscale and diverse menu with higher-quality ingredients. Over the past decade, Chipotle’s revenue has increased steadily, showing consistent year-on-year growth even during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2025, the company’s revenue amounted to nearly 12 billion U.S. dollars, reflecting a threefold increase compared to 2016. Chipotle’s net income also reached an all-time high in 2025, exceeding 1.5 billion U.S. dollars.
Has Chipotle recovered from its food safety controversy?
Focusing on fresh ingredients is one of Chipotle’s key commitments. In the company’s "food with integrity" statement, Chipotle outlined its dedication to using responsibly sourced ingredients while supporting local farmers and environmental stewardship. However, this promise of quality ingredients proved problematic for the company in the past. In 2015, consumers from multiple U.S. states developed foodborne illnesses after eating at the popular Mexican fast casual chain. As a result, Chipotle’s operating profit sharply declined in 2016 and remained significantly below its previous peak for the following four years. That said, it has once again experienced substantial growth from 2021 onwards, surpassing 1.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2025. That year, Chipotle’s operating costs and spending on advertising and marketing also reached the highest figures to date.
How popular is Chipotle?
Chipotle Mexican Grill was one of the most well-known restaurant chains in the United States based on brand awareness in 2025. While the company placed ahead of direct competitor Panera Bread, it ranked significantly below chains like ²Ñ³¦¶Ù´Ç²Ô²¹±ô»å’s, KFC, or Domino’s Pizza. Meanwhile, Chipotle’s American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) score of 76 out of 100 was below the U.S. restaurant industry's average of 79. In comparison, the highest-scoring quick service chains included Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, and Panda Express.
Despite its lower customer satisfaction, the company is on an upward trend across all key financial metrics and has big plans for 2026, looking to expand in Asia with its first restaurants in South Korea and Singapore. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Chipotle was one of the most valuable QSR brands worldwide in 2025, being valued at over 26 billion U.S. dollars.
