Bulgaria - statistics & facts
Bulgaria continues its European integration path. In June 2025, it received the European Commission and the European Central Bank's approval to join the Eurozone from January 1, 2026. Even before adopting the euro, Bulgaria's national currency, Bulgarian lev, is tied to it via the European exchange rate mechanism. Thus, the Bulgarian lev to the euro ratio is fixed at 1.95583. The country had to fulfill various economic and political criteria to join the Eurozone as well as previously the European Union, which it joined in 2007. However, Bulgaria has the lowest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in the EU and continues to tackle corruption as one of its challenges.
