Croatia is a rather small country located in Southeastern Europe, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, with its capital, Zagreb, being the largest city in the country. Croatia’s population has been on the decline over the past years, totaling approximately 3.84 million individuals in 2024. The ongoing population decline is mirrored in low fertility rates; in 2022, 1.53 children were born per woman, which is far below the necessary replacement rate. However, regardless of the negative trends in population and the fertility rate, life expectancy in Croatia has shown a positive boost in the last years, the average life expectancy at birth reaching 77.58 years in 2022.
