Tourism greenhouse gas emissions worldwide - statistics & facts
Tourism plays a key role in the global economy and is one of the fastest-growing sectors worldwide. However, it is also a significant contributor to climate change. Producing around five billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) each year, tourism is responsible for nine percent of global GHG emissions. With the sectors’ emissions projected to rise by 25 percent by 2030, compared to 2016 levels, the race is on to decarbonize tourism and mitigate its environmental impacts.
