Home cooking in the U.S. - statistics & facts
Americans are increasingly staying away from the kitchen. Since the nineties, when more than half of the food budget went to food products consumed at home, the share of out of home food spending has grown to over 58 percent. The only reversal of this trend could be seen during the pandemic, when consumers were partially unable and partially heavily discouraged to continue spending on out-of-home food. Currently, the food budget of the average American consumer is about 10.63 percent of their disposable income. At-home food consumption makes up 5.03 percent of their disposable income. The entire food-at-home market is worth slightly over 400 billion U.S. dollars. Mail order and home deliveries of food for at-home consumption have risen to 37.4 billion dollars.
