Mental health and substance use disorders are among the leading contributors to the burden of non-communicable disease in the United States. In 2024, around one-quarter of adults reported experiencing a mental illness within the past year, with women and young adults particularly affected. Despite high healthcare spending and expanding access, unmet need remains widespread, and severe outcomes such as substance-related deaths and self-harm continue to pose major challenges.
