Mental health facilities are critically important for treating those with acute and chronic mental health disorders. In the U.S., private non-profit facilities made up the large majority of the facilities available, with nearly such facilities in 2024. Private for-profit mental health facilities were much less prevalent across the U.S. with facilities in total. Different types of government-operated facilities (community, state, or federal) made up the rest. 

Mental health in the U.S.

There are several mental health conditions present in adult populations such as depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, and bipolar disorder among others. Depression is a common mental condition that affects millions of people every year. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, having trouble falling asleep, and feeling tired most of the time. Anxiety is another common mental health condition seen in U.S. adults and is characterized by feeling on-edge, being irritable, and having difficulty controlling feelings of worry.

Mental health conditions and treatment options

There are many treatment options available for people that have mental health conditions, including hospitalization, therapy, or medications. Space for inpatient hospitalization is limited, with only mental health facilities offering hospital inpatient services. Cost and availability are among the top five reasons listed as an obstacle for seeking mental health treatments. Despite these obstacles, an ever-growing number of adults in the U.S. have sought treatment or counselling for their mental health in the past year, reaching over ** million in 2023.
