Baby products in Germany - statistics & facts
Baby products may be picked out and bought by adults, but the target customer, by their very nature, requires a careful touch. Products need to be manufactured a certain way and from appropriate materials, which may not necessarily be the same as for toddlers or older children. In addition, products for babies need to be rigorously checked and then certified as safe before they are available on the market. Some items, though, come in direct contact with the mother first, e.g. for aiding nursing, and these also require as much attention to ensure safe use for both mother and baby. Products simultaneously need to be durable for the time of use and be able to withstand the expected hygiene maintenance required. Most recently, consumers in Germany spent around 2.6 billion euros on purchases for babies and children, with figures having increased somewhat after 2020. This may have to do both with the brief birth rate increase during the COVID-19 pandemic and higher inflation levels in Germany at the time.
