Renewable energy outlook in Europe - statistics & facts
In 2023, Europe consumed roughly 17.8 exajoules of renewable energy, with Germany being the country with the highest consumption of renewables. In the European Union, the share of energy consumption covered by renewable energy stood at 24.6 percent in 2023, with the power sector registering the largest renewable penetration. By 2030, the EU aims to achieve an overall renewable share of 45 percent and has set a binding target of 42.5 percent for all member states. Regarding renewable targets in the power sector, some countries such as Estonia and Denmark are aiming for a 100 percent renewable electricity mix by 2030. On average, EU countries are targeting a renewable electricity generation share of over 80 percent by that year.
