Ecuador was the Latin American country with the highest number of threatened living species in 2024. That year, a total of animal and plant species native to Ecuador were registered on the IUCN Red List as under threat of extinction. Mexico and Brazil had the second and third ecosystems with the most threatened species in the region, respectively, each registering more than ** species. Cuba, in turn, ranks first when it comes to the number of endangered animal species in Caribbean countries.
