The Index evaluates 57 countries and the European Union, which are together responsible for more than 90 percent of global GHG emissions. It measures promises and evaluates countries' 2030 targets in emissions, renewable energy, and energy use, as well as looks at current performance.
GHG emissions weight 40 percent of the index score, while all other criteria weight 20 percent each.

Based on the 2022 Climate Change Performance Index, Chile was the best-ranked Latin American country that year (among countries surveyed), with a total index score of ****. While ranking high for greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy, it had the worst score for energy use in the region. Meanwhile, Brazil and Mexico were the worst-ranked in terms of climate policy, with a score of *** and ***, respectively.
