Shifting marriage patterns

The number of marriages in Poland has fluctuated over time, with notable peaks and valleys. After reaching a high of 257,700 marriages in 2008, the country experienced a dramatic decrease to 145,000 in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While there was a slight recovery in 2021, the number fell again to 146,000 in 2023. Simultaneously, the median age for marriage has increased by nearly seven years for both men and women since 1980, indicating a trend towards later marriages.

Number of divorces on the rise

These changes in marriage patterns have occurred alongside an increase in the number of divorces, with the number rising to almost 57,000 in 2023, although it is a considerable decrease from the peak in 2006 at 72,000. In terms of divorce causes, over 31,000 marriages in 2023 ended due to character differences. Infidelity and alcohol abuse were the second and third most common causes, with 9,000 and nearly 7,000 divorces, respectively.
