In 2023, German discounter ALDI and French retailer Carrefour each had over *** stores in Belgium, making these two supermarkets the largest food retailers in the country in terms of the number of stores. When looking at the total shop floor area though, Carrefour outperformed ALDI considerably, with a shop floor area of nearly ** square meters vs. ALDI’s roughly ** square meters.

 Colruyt has the highest retail sales value… 

Despite having more stores, neither ALDI nor Carrefour had the largest retail sales value of the food retailers active in Belgium. **, the family-owned discounter headquartered in Halle, was the supermarket chain with the highest sales value in 2018, at nearly **** billion euros. By comparison, that was almost twice as much as Carrefour and over three times as much as ALDI.

…as well as the largest market share

Colruyt was also the leading food purchasing group in Belgium in 2017 based on market share. Colruyt, which next to the supermarkets of the same name also operates the Okay, BioPlanet and Spar supermarkets, had market share of nearly ** percent in Belgium. Carrefour had a market share of nearly ** percent this year, whereas ALDI’s market share was ** percent.
