Unlike their American counterparts, which initially targeted low-income populations with affordable prices, the early Brazilian supermarkets were located in upscale neighborhoods and had a sophisticated, modern air. Nowadays food retailers are present all over Brazil, reaching a total of more than 96,000 establishments in 2023. In that same year, the of more than 1.1 trillion Brazilian reals, with food retail accounting for just over nine percent of the gross domestic product of the country. Supermarkets play a significant part in this industry, as about 44 percent of all food retail sales in Brazil in 2024 were specifically made by supermarkets and hypermarkets.
