Wine production

China is the leading grape producer in the world and the third country with the largest vineyard area after Spain and France. Historically, grape wine has been known and consumed in China for hundreds of years. However, other types of alcoholic beverages, mostly made of rice or sorghum, have been accepted more widely. The first Chinese winery – Changyu – was founded in 1892 and became the largest winemaker in the country. Henan and Jiangsu provinces are the leading wine producing regions accounting for more than **** of the national wine production volume. In 2023, China produced around **** million liters of wine and relied heavily on imports.

Wine imports

Along with a sudden decrease in wine consumption since 2018, the import volume of wine into China has been decreasing over the past years. Wine is no longer a special occasion or a gift-giving trend, but rather a new emerging norm among the younger, urban population. Most of the young Chinese consumers prefer buying imported wines online, highly prioritizing red French wines. Hence, France is one of China's major wine suppliers.
