In November 2017, the GOP proposed a change to the federal income tax structure, which would allow homeowners to only deduct interest paid up to 500,000 U.S. dollars towards their mortgage from their federal income taxes, rather than up to one million U.S. dollars as is currently allowed. In that year, 29.2 percent of the homes in Nantucket County (Martha's Vineyard), Massachusetts had mortgages worth more than 500,000 U.S. dollars, which means that 29.2 percent of homeowners in that county could see an increase in their federal income taxes if this proposed change becomes reality.
