In a government bill from 2014/15 about the worsening security political state in Europe, the Swedish government proposed to increase the budget for defense. In the proposal, the defense budget was expected to grow from 2016 to 2020 and reach a peak of just over ** billion Swedish kronor in 2020.

Expected budget and actual expenses for the Swedish defense

      In the government bill, the proposed defense budget for 2017 was almost ** billion Swedish kronor. During that year, the actual public expenditure on defense was around ten billion higher, at almost ** billion Swedish kronor.    

Defense expenditure is the fifth highest expenditure share

      The expenditure on defense composed**** percent of the total public expenditure in Sweden in 2017. That was the fifth largest expenditure share. The largest expenditure was for social protection, which composed ** percent of the total public expenditure. Social protection includes both benefits, such as social welfare, pension and health insurance, and subventions for health and childcare.
