As of May 2022, the older age groups in Sweden were more clearly in favor of joining the military alliance NATO than the younger ones. Three fourths of the respondents between 65 and 79 years supported the Swedish NATO-membership application filed in May 2022. Among people aged 18 to 29 and 30 to 49 years, roughly 60 percent of the respondents had the same opinion. The share of Swedes in favor of a membership increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Following more than a year of negotiations, Sweden was set to join NATO as of July 2023.
