The last years have been turbulent for Japan’s governing party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). In September 2025, Prime Minister Ishiba announced his intention to resign, taking responsibility for the LDP’s historic loss in the upper house election two months earlier. The Constitution of Japan went into effect in 1947, regulating the separation of the legislative, executive, and judicial branch. The National Diet of Japan is elected to pass legislation, while the Cabinet represents the executive organ. The judicial power in Japan resides with the judicial courts. The judiciary, headed by the Supreme Court, determines the constitutionality of the laws enacted by the National Diet and policies adopted by the Cabinet.
