Shipbuilding industry in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan is one of the leading shipbuilding countries in the world, currently ranking third after China and South Korea. The shipbuilding industry played a pivotal role in enabling Japan to become one of the largest economies globally by providing the means for the mass export of manufactured goods. Sustained domestic demand paired with technological prowess propelled Japan's shipbuilding industry into a strong position on the international scene at an early stage. The island nation relies heavily on maritime trade, with the vast majority of international cargo being transported via ships. Consequently, the Japanese merchant fleet grew to become one of the biggest worldwide, which in turn provided an ideal environment for shipbuilding and related technologies to thrive. Maritime transportation, shipbuilding, and marine engineering form the core of Japan's tightly intertwined maritime sector. Together, they face—on top of a highly competitive market—the challenge of making Japanese maritime shipping carbon-neutral by 2050.
Securing the future of shipbuilding in Japan
Japan's shipbuilding industry is under immense pressure from international competitors, most notably from China. To stay competitive against the low construction prices offered by foreign shipyards and the rapidly advancing technological achievements of their rivals, some of the largest Japanese players decided to forfeit domestic competition and form a united front. Hence, Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United Corporation, which have the highest annual gross tonnage output in Japan's shipbuilding industry, established Nihon Shipyard as a joint venture in January 2021. Alliances and strategic partnerships also spread to the maritime transport industry. The majority of ships used by maritime transport operators were constructed by Japanese companies in domestic shipyards.  Innovation is the other avenue to stay competitive for Japanese companies. Flagship projects of the industry are zero-emission ships, autonomous vessels, and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, often realized in joint developments with other big Japanese players, think tanks, and universities standing at the forefront of technology.Advancing on the path to carbon neutrality
Vessels in Japan's maritime fleet account for roughly 10 million CO₂ emissions per year. To contribute to Japan’s quest toward carbon neutrality, the shipbuilding industry has set itself ambitious goals regarding innovation. Manufacturers and the Japanese government spend billions of Japanese yen on R&D to develop next-generation propulsion systems and further related technologies. Large vessel projects include ships propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. While the first LNG-propelled vessels are already operational, the scale of the introduction of such novel technologies is still low, especially in the case of Japan's intercontinental maritime shipping fleet. Currently, the majority of large vessels run on diesel or some other kind of conventional high-pollution propulsion system. As of 2025, the road to carbon neutrality in Japan's maritime industry is still long and winding, but firm steps toward it have been initiated.
