The value of tourism expenditure by domestic travelers remained steadily at over ** trillion yen in recent years prior to the pandemic, with overnight trips accounting for the lion’s share of domestic tourism expenditure in Japan. While same-day trips were popular during short holidays, the industry received boosts from high travel activities that entailed overnight stays during consecutive public holidays, such as during the Golden Week.
The week-long holiday starting at the end of April and running until the beginning of May is considered a popular opportunity among the working population in Japan to spend time with the family and go on leisure trips.
