Luxembourg's share in the total EU number of payment transactions from 2010 to 2020, by type of service shows that Luxembourg had a 72.4 percent share in the total e-money transactions with e-money issued by resident PSPs in the EU. This was a slight increase compared to the previous year. Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases.

In 2019, Luxembourg had approximately 338 card payments per capita compared to 204 in Belgium and 294 in the Netherlands. Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
