The number of people emigrating from Norway started to increase in 2008 and peaked in 2016, when more than 40,000 people emigrated. It then fell rapidly over the next years, falling below 27,000 in 2020, partly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. It then increased again, reaching 32,000 people in 2022. In 2021, the most common destination for people emigrating from Norway was the neighboring country Sweden.
