In spite of being one of West Africa’s most vibrant economies, thanks to its oil wealth, the Angolan mobile industry has only started to flourish in recent years. Almost a decade following the civil war which ended in 2002, Angola’s mobile penetration rate and number of mobile subscribers remained relatively low, placing the country in the 16th and 17th spot among other African countries in 2011. Angola was the first African country though to have a 4G network, as the local mobile operator Movitel launched the commercialized LTE in 2014. Since then, the number of mobile LTE subscriptions in Angola has been on the rise and reached about *** thousand LTE subscriptions in the second quarter of 2015.

The rapid 4G adoption and the emerging mobile phone market brought advantages to a number of mobile vendors in Angola. In mid 2016, Samsung held a share of 27 percent of the mobile phone device market in the country, followed by Huawei at nearly ** percent. Apple and Alcatel had a market share of about * percent. The leading mobile operating system in Angola is Android with a share of close to ** percent, as of June 2021.
