Throughout the period given, Germany was the leading importing country of semi-finished steel products in the European Union. The country's imports grew from around **** million metric tons to around ** million metric tons between 2013 and 2018, before plummeting dramatically in the years that followed. As of 2023, Germany imported more than **** million metric tons of finished and semi-finished steel products. That year, Italy ranked second, with almost **** million metric tons of imports. Semi-finished steel products are mainly used in industry for the further production of finished steel products. They are produced through the continuous casting of liquid steel or by rolling or forging of steel ingots.
