Steel production in the UK - Statistics & Facts

The industrialization of steel production originated in the United Kingdom (UK) and was part of various innovative manufacturing techniques that shaped the era of the Industrial Revolution. The United Kingdom was a pioneer in steel fabrication during the early 19th century, but its leading role in the global market has diminished in recent years.



Production levels of the industry

In 2021, nearly 1.9 billion metric tons of crude steel were produced worldwide. That year, China accounted for over half of all steel produced, while the EU27 made up less than 10 percent of the market. The steel industries worldwide encountered various problems recently, such as a decline in demand for steel, competition from abroad, and rising energy costs, and the United Kingdom’s steel sector was no exception. Since the financial crash in 2009, crude steel production in the UK has dropped to 5.96 million tons in 2022, despite some increases recorded in 2013 and 2014. Moreover, pig iron production also dropped to 4.8 million metric tons that year, representing a decrease of 17 percent year-on-year and a decrease of 51 percent compared to the peak of 9.7 million tons produced in 2014.
