In 2023/24, only ** percent of patients attending an emergency department (ED) in Northern Ireland were treated and discharged or admitted within four hours of their arrival. This is much lower than the other three countries in the UK (which hover around 60 to 70 percent), not to mention the national target of 95 percent of ED patients treated or admitted within four hours. Wait times in EDs has been increasing throughout the recorded time period, but particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.
