Index values used for this statistic are based on the national average of the Federal Republic of Germany (= 100). The purchasing power index for a region (federal state,district, community, post code area etc.) indicates the purchasing power level of that region per inhabitant or household in comparison to the national average. GfK POS revenues depict the regional distribution of retail revenues. In contrast to the GfK purchasing power for the retail sector, which is based on the location of the main residence of the consumer, the GfK POS is based on the location of the retailer, i.e. the "point-of-sale" (POS).

In 2024, Hamburg had an above-average retail purchasing power per inhabitant at around  points, as well as above national average retail revenues at roughly  points. The average is 100 points. Among the sales channels fuelling German retail revenue, discounters and specialist retailers took the lead in recent years.
