The annual expenditure on restaurants and hotels of households in the United Kingdom amounted to nearly ** and a half billion British pounds in 2020, down percent from the previous year. Spending was particularly lower during the second and third quarter of the year, reaching as low as *** billion British pounds between July and September 2020. That was **** percent less than in the same period of 2019. The annual expenditure on restaurants and hotels by UK households significantly declined in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which resulted in strict stay-at-home measures implemented across the country to control the spread of the virus. Annual expenditure increased to over ** billion in the second half of 2021.
