In 2019, over 60 percent of Luxembourg individuals made an online purchase in the first quarter of the year, a slight increase compared to 2018. Approximately one in five individuals in 2019 has never bought or ordered items on the Internet before.

E-commerce market was expected to increase

In 2018, online sales in the Grand Duchy were valued at roughly 800 million euros and were forecast to reach over 850 million euros in 2019. Holiday or travel arrangements, books and clothes were among the most popular products to buy online in 2018. Online grocery shopping, on the other hand, is still fairly uncommon.

Luxembourg in the European e-commerce scene

Whilst the domestic e-commerce market might not be too important for some (European surveys do not always mention the country as it is deemed too small), Luxembourg does have several big companies that are active in Europe. For example, The Grand Duchy is home to the European division of Amazon called Amazon EU S.à r.l. Amazon Europe’s total revenue was over 30 billion euros in 2019.
