California is the wine capital of the United States by no small margin. In 2024, the state had over the number of wineries of the next closest state and was home to **** of all wineries in the nation. Unsurprisingly, California also produced the bulk of the country’s wine. In fact, if California were a country, it would be the fourth largest wine producer worldwide, behind France, Italy and Spain.Â
An ideal location for wine making
California’s climate and landscape make it particularly well suited to growing wine grapes. The state receives year-round sunshine and its varied landscape supports a variety of wine grapes. The coast mixes the warm inland air with cool ocean breezes ideal for cooler climate varieties such as Pinot Noir, while sun-loving varieties like Merlot find their home on the drier hillsides. Chardonnay was the most crushed grape variety in Californian wine production, accounting for almost ** percent of all wine grapes. On the other hand, red wine grapes were overall the most crushed type in the state, with over *** million tons of red wine grapes crushed.
