According to a survey conducted among women with endometriosis in the United Kingdom, the time taken for women to be diagnosed with the disease is getting longer. Between 2020 and 2025, the average time taken between first going to a GP with symptoms and an endometriosis diagnosis increased from years to almost years.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other pelvic areas. This tissue responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, which can lead to pain, inflammation, and sometimes scarring. Common symptoms include painful periods, ongoing pelvic pain, and difficulty getting pregnant, though experiences vary. It can be difficult to diagnose, as a definitive diagnosis often requires laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to confirm it. Symptoms are often dismissed as “normal” period pain, which can delay people getting the care they need.
