The immigrant population was unevenly distributed across French territory in 2021. While immigrants represented nearly ** percent of the population in ÃŽle-de-France, this rate was only *** percent in Brittany or *** percent in the Pays de la Loire. But it is in Mayotte that the share of the immigrant population is the highest, with more than **** of the local population. At the national level, the immigrant population represented more than ** percent of the total population in France in 2021.

Immigration in France

The number of immigrant entries into France per year varied significantly between 2004 and 2022. The number of arrivals peaked in 2022 with ** new arrivals. However, this figure should be considered in relation to the number of departures per year. The net migration balance was ** in the same year 2022.
There were more than **** immigrants in France, the majority of whom were aged between 25 and 54. Among these immigrants, very few obtained French nationality. In 2023, * foreigners had obtained French nationality.

The difficult integration of immigrants in France

Contrary to popular belief, the immigrant population is well integrated into the labor market in France. In 2021, ** percent of immigrants aged 15 to 64 were employed, compared to ** percent for the French population with no immigration background. Yet, despite these good employment figures, a majority of French people declared in 2018 that immigrants were not sufficiently integrated into French society. And more than ** percent of French people even stated in 2018 that immigration played a rather negative role in France.
