Many people from African countries cross the Mediterranean Sea each year to Europe. Between 2014 and 2022, the highest number of migrants was observed in 2015, with more than one million people. The lowest annual figures were fewer than 100,000 people in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the end of the pandemic, the numbers have slightly increased.
