* A consumption unit consists of one of the following entities: (1) All members of a particular household related by blood, marriage, adoption, or other legal ties; (2) a person living alone or sharing a household with others or living as a tenant in a private house or boarding house or permanently in a hotel or motel but financially independent; or (3) two or more people living together and using their incomes to make joint spending decisions. Financial independence is determined by spending behavior regarding three major categories of expenses: Housing, food, and other daily living expenses. To be considered financially independent, the respondent must have at least two or three major expense categories, in whole or in part.
