* A consumption unit consists of one of the following entities: (1) All members of a particular household related by blood, marriage, adoption, or other legal ties; (2) a person living alone or sharing a household with others or living as a tenant in a private house or boarding house or permanently in a hotel or motel but financially independent; or (3) two or more people living together and using their incomes to make joint spending decisions. Financial independence is determined by spending behavior regarding three major categories of expenses: Housing, food, and other daily living expenses. To be considered financially independent, the respondent must have at least two or three major expense categories, in whole or in part. The data are based on a diary. The figures shown are based on unpublished data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The data are available upon request.
